New Delhi: A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time) on Friday, followed by a 6.8 magnitude aftershock.

The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Local reports indicate that at least 20 people have died so far.

The tremors were felt across neighboring countries, including Thailand, China, India, and Bangladesh.

In Bangkok, Thailand, metro and rail services were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called for an urgent crisis meeting and declared a state of emergency in the capital.

In China’s Yunnan province, strong tremors were recorded, with the China Earthquake Networks Center reporting a magnitude of 7.9.

Mild tremors were also experienced in Kolkata, Manipur (India), Dhaka, and Chattogram (Bangladesh), according to reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern and assured India’s readiness to assist if needed.

“Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone,” he stated, directing authorities to remain on standby.

Videos from affected areas show buildings shaking violently, causing panic among residents.

In Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, an under-construction skyscraper collapsed, trapping at least 43 workers under the debris.

Rescue operations are underway, with emergency teams working to locate survivors.

Authorities are still assessing the full extent of casualties and damages across the affected regions.
