International: It is already known that North Korean troops have been fighting alongside Russia in the Ukraine war.
Despite the loss of hundreds of North Korean soldiers, Kim Jong-un has reportedly sent additional reinforcements to Russia. According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).
Uncertain Number of North Korean Troops
North Korea has been supplying Russia with large-scale weaponry and ammunition while also sending thousands of troops for some time.
Reports from U.S., South Korean, and Ukrainian intelligence agencies suggest that between 10,000 and 12,000 North Korean troops have joined Russian forces.
In the past and over the past two months, approximately 1,000–3,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed in the Kursk region.
However, South Korean officials state that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact number of newly deployed North Korean troops.
Well-Disciplined but Lacking Combat Experience
North Korean troops are highly disciplined and well-trained, they suffer from a lack of combat experience and limited knowledge of the terrain.
This has led to significant casualties. These North Korean units have become primary targets in Ukrainian drone strikes while fighting for Russia.
Heavy Casualties – Conflicting Estimates
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, around 4,000 North Korean troops have either died or sustained serious injuries.
However, U.S. military intelligence estimates the number to be around 1,200.
Russia’s Rewards: Advanced Weapons for North Korea?
Experts suggest that Russia might provide North Korea with advanced weaponry and cutting-edge technology in return for its military and arms support.
This could significantly boost North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, raising security concerns in the Asia-Pacific region.
The United States and South Korea have expressed growing concerns over this alliance.
North Korean Troop Deployment Amid Saudi Peace Talks
Peace talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war are currently underway in Saudi Arabia.
However, before any clear resolution emerges, North Korea’s decision to send additional troops to Russia has raised eyebrows.
Analysts believe that Kim Jong-un is strengthening ties with Russia.
It is to secure greater military and economic benefits in the future.
