TRUMP’S- NEW- ID- RULES- TIGHTEN- GRIP- ON- IMMIGRANTS

INTERNATIONAL: Trump’s New ID Rules Tighten Grip on Immigrants

The Trump administration has introduced stringent regulations requiring all non-US citizens over 18 to carry legal identification at all times, effective April 11, 2025.

This move, rooted in the Alien Registration Act of 1940, aims to identify illegal immigrants but has raised concerns among Indian communities, who form a significant portion of green card and H1B visa holders. Authorities warn that non-compliance will lead to heavy fines and strict penalties.

Targeting Illegal Immigration
Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem announced the enforcement of these rules to address illegal immigration. While the government emphasizes identifying the 2.2 million Indians among the estimated 5.4 million living illegally in the US, only 2% of illegal immigrants have expired visas. The rules mandate immediate presentation of identity documents during public inspections.

Mandatory ID for Non-Citizens
Non-citizens staying in the US for over 30 days must carry visas or identity documents constantly. Failure to show these when requested by officers can result in severe consequences. The policy also requires teenagers aged 14 and above to register biometric details, including fingerprints, via a 325R form within 30 days.

Registration and Penalties
The administration has clarified that registration does not guarantee legal status for unauthorized immigrants. Providing false information during registration may lead to imprisonment rather than deportation. Unregistered individuals caught during checks face fines and up to six months in jail.

Address Updates Mandatory
Green card and visa holders must report address changes within 10 days, or face a $5,000 fine. This rule underscores the government’s focus on maintaining accurate records of immigrants’ whereabouts. The courts have recently approved these measures, enabling stricter enforcement.

Community Concerns
Indian immigrants, many of whom are legally residing in the US, feel targeted by these policies. The rules, while aimed at illegal immigration, place additional burdens on law-abiding residents. Critics argue the measures create an atmosphere of constant scrutiny for immigrant communities.
