NATIONAL: Trump’s Record-Low Approval at 100 Days Signals Trouble for Democrats

Historic Low Approval Rating
Donald Trump, the 47th U.S. President, has recorded the lowest 100-day approval rating in 80 years at 39%, according to an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted April 18-22, 2025. This surpasses his previous low of 42% in 2017, marking a significant decline in public support since his January 20, 2025, inauguration.

Economic Policies Under Fire
Trump’s aggressive economic agenda, particularly his tariff policies, has drawn widespread criticism. The poll reveals 73% of Americans view the economy as deteriorating, with 71% linking tariffs to rising inflation and 72% fearing a near-term recession.

Tariff Disapproval
Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of tariffs, with only 34% in support, per the poll. Only 31% believe his claim that tariffs will strengthen the economy long-term, reflecting skepticism about his economic strategy.

Immigration: A Mixed Response
Trump’s immigration policies, a cornerstone of his campaign, fare better than other issues, with 53% disapproving compared to 57-67% for other topics like the economy and foreign relations. However, support has waned since February, with 48% now feeling he’s gone too far with deportations.

Global Leadership Concerns
The poll indicates 49% of Americans believe Trump has weakened U.S. global leadership, compared to 34% who see it strengthened, an improvement over Joe Biden’s 2022 score of 48-23%. Yet, 46% criticize Trump’s approach to Russia as overly friendly, despite his unfulfilled promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Democrats’ Trust Deficit
Despite Trump’s low approval, Democrats face a deeper trust crisis, with 69% of Americans viewing the Democratic Party as out of touch, compared to 60% for Trump and 64% for Republicans. Trump is trusted over congressional Democrats to handle national issues by 37% to 30%, with 30% trusting neither.

Partisan Divide
Within party lines, 19% of Republicans see Trump as out of touch, while 38% of Democrats feel the same about their party, highlighting stronger Republican loyalty. Among independents, 76% view Democrats as out of touch, compared to 62% for Trump, underscoring Democratic challenges.

Voter Loyalty Holds
Only 6% of Trump’s 2024 voters express regret, indicating his base remains largely steadfast despite broader disapproval. This resilience contrasts with Democratic struggles to unify their supporters, as per the poll’s findings.

Implications for Both Sides
Trump’s low approval ratings signal public discontent with his rapid policy shifts, yet Democrats’ failure to capitalize on this discontent poses a strategic challenge. The poll suggests both parties must address public trust to navigate the polarized political landscape effectively.
